Currency in South Korea
The official currency is the South Korean Won, abbreviated as KRW and symbolised by ₩.
Common banknotes include ₩1,000, ₩5,000, ₩10,000, and ₩50,000; coins are ₩10, ₩50, ₩100, and ₩500.
Cash is widely used, especially in traditional markets, small shops, and for public transport reloads.
Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) are accepted in most restaurants, hotels, and retail stores.
Mobile payments like Samsung Pay and KakaoPay are popular among locals but may not be accessible to foreign visitors.
It’s advisable to carry a mix of cash and cards, and to exchange a small amount of KRW before arrival or at the airport for immediate expenses.
For better exchange rates, use currency exchange kiosks in areas like Myeongdong rather than airport counters.
ATMs are widely available, but not all accept foreign cards—look for machines at convenience stores like 7-Eleven or major banks.
